The reality of the role

Three things every new PO learns the hard way.

01

Your first PRD gets ignored.

You wrote five pages. The engineers read the title and started coding around it. The CEO asked one question you didn’t anticipate. By Friday you realize a good spec isn’t long — it’s defensible.

02

You can’t defend your priorities.

Sales wants the integration. The CEO wants the redesign. Support wants the bug fix. Someone asks why you ranked the bug below the redesign. “It just felt right” doesn’t survive that meeting.

03

A forgotten stakeholder blocks launch.

Two days before release, legal flags a privacy issue you’d been parking. Marketing didn’t know the new flow changed their onboarding email. You learn that managing stakeholders isn’t a skill — it’s the job.

Nobody teaches you this on the job. Or in any Agile course. So we built one that does.

The promise

When you finish, you’ll walk away with this.

Not a binder of notes. Not a passing grade. A portfolio.

See the full curriculum →

A defensible PRD for a realistic feature, with success metrics that survive a CFO’s first question.

A prioritized backlog scored with RICE — and the reasoning, so you can defend any item.

A roadmap stakeholders can read in 30 seconds and explain to their boss in 60.

A stakeholder map plus three difficult-conversation scripts you’ll actually need.

A discovery interview transcript from a real-feeling AI persona, plus the synthesis.

A metrics tree with a North Star and the leading indicators that move it.

A capstone case-study deck that doubles as your interview portfolio.

Plus: a LinkedIn-attachable certificate from Backlog Academy, with a public profile page showing your work.

The curriculum

28 modules. 10 stages. One portfolio.

Inside every module

How you’ll actually learn.

You read or listen your way through each module — then put it to work. In the Loop modules, you draft a real artifact, get it AI-coached, and defend it against an AI stakeholder. Your strongest pieces become your capstone.

Honest expectations

This program is opinionated. Here’s who it’s for.

Built for

  • Engineers, designers, and BAs eyeing a PO role
  • Junior POs (0–2 years) without a mentor at work
  • Self-taught PMs who want a structured upgrade
  • Anyone who learns by doing, not watching

Not built for

  • Senior PMs leveling up — try Reforge instead
  • Anyone looking for a passive, multiple-choice certification
  • People who want a theory-only Agile/Scrum credential
  • “I’ll watch the videos at 2× and be fine” learners

If you’re not sure, the curriculum PDF will tell you in 5 minutes. So will our 14-day refund.

Why I built this

Why I built Backlog Academy.

After years as a PO at Backlog, I kept watching new POs hit the same walls — bad templates, no feedback loop, nothing to show after a year of real work.

This is the program I wish I’d had on day one. Hands-on. Output-first. With the kind of feedback I had to wait years for a senior PM to give me.

I teach the modules, grade the capstones, and answer questions in the cohort threads. If you join, you’ll see me in there.

FAQ

Questions you should be asking.

Plan on 4–6 hours a week and most people work through it over a few months. It’s fully self-paced — you get a year of access, so you can sprint the stages or stretch them out. The exercises take longer than the lessons — that’s by design.
No. Modules 1–2 onboard non-tech learners. Many of our students came from design, BA, customer success, and even teaching backgrounds. You’ll need basic comfort with software concepts — broadly, what an API is, what a release means — but no coding.
Three things. (1) Lower price — $149 vs $1,900+. (2) Output-first — every module is built around producing something, not a 90-minute lecture. (3) An AI-coached practice loop — you draft, get structured feedback, revise. Reforge is for senior PMs leveling up; this is for new POs leveling in.
The certificate is a signal. The portfolio is the proof. Hiring managers we’ve talked to care about your portfolio — they click through your certificate URL to see what you actually produced. That’s why every Backlog Academy certificate links to your public capstone page.
You have 1 year of access. Some students move fast, some take their time across the 28 modules. As long as you complete the capstone within Year 1, the certificate is yours.
Yes — most L&D budgets cover $149 without approval. Email hello@backlog.academy and we’ll send a tax-friendly invoice for your finance team.
Each exercise has a structured rubric. For a PRD, that’s things like clarity of problem statement, defensibility of success metrics, identification of edge cases, and working with engineering constraints. You submit your draft, the AI grades each dimension, and you get specific feedback per dimension. It’s not a chatbot — it’s structured feedback on structured work.
You can join the Continuing membership ($9/month) for weekly fresh content and new AI-coached scenarios. Or just keep your portfolio and certificate — no obligation, no auto-charge.
14-day no-questions refund if you’ve completed fewer than 2 modules. After that, we ask why and try to help.
